In South Africa there is a wedding tradition where the parents of both the bride and groom carry fire to light the newlywed's hearth. This is said to be symbolic of showing the newlyweds the fire from their hearts.

The art of hair braiding is common all over Africa. Men and women have finely braided hair in honour of their wedding day. To 'set' the braiding the hair is often covered with animal fat and ochre.
