Customs

Sicilian Cathedral

Planning a wedding in Italy is more complicated than in the UK, but it is possible. Here are the different ways to get married in Italy...

  • Religious Ceremony

A Roman Catholic wedding is legally binding so there is no need to have a separate civil ceremony. They are performed in Roman Catholic Churches and you will need to contact your local priest to help you prepare. Some churches can perform the ceremony in English. It is unlikely that they will permit the marriage of non-Catholics.

  • Other Religious Ceremonies

For religious ceremonies other than Roman Catholic you need to have a civil ceremony first otherwise the marriage won't be legal under Italian law.

  • Civil Ceremony

Performed in a lyocal Italian Register Office a Civil Ceremony is legally binding and will be conducted in Italian. It is a legal obligation to have an interpreter present even if you or your partner can speak Italian.
