Customs
- Civil Wedding
A civil wedding requires that one of the couple have lived in France for 40 days prior to the wedding. Civil weddings can only take place in a local Mairie (town hall) civil weddings cannot be performed outside, in a hotel, chateau or any other location.
- Religious Ceremony
No matter what your religion French law states that in order to have a religious ceremony you must have a civil ceremony first, either in France or in the UK. There are some churches in France where the ceremony can be performed in English.
- Symbolic Wedding
This is a symbolic exchanging of vows which can take place anywhere you chose. However it has no legal value. In this case some people chose to have a civil wedding at home in the UK and then have a symbolic wedding in France.
Paperwork
Non-French nationals require a certificate of celibacy in order to have there wedding in France. You may also need to obtain a certificate of custom law. We advise that you contact the local mairie (town hall) where the marriage is to take place in order to check the formalities a British citizen must go through to marry in that area.
