Getting Married Abroad

It's easy to understand why getting married abroad is so popular; the thought of sun on your wedding day is enough to draw anyone away from the rainy UK to more exotic destinations.

Getting married abroad is most certainly appealing; however it is more complicated than getting married in the UK. Many people are put off by the difficulties of arranging a wedding abroad and the complicated legalities involved.

Locations

With so many beautiful places in the world it may be hard to decide which country is best for you. However, different countries have varying styles of venues, weddings and local customs which may help you make your decision. Below are out top ten wedding destinations:

Venues

There are a wide range of venues all over the world in which to host your wedding including:

  • Castles - A young girls dream and a beautiful venue for the ultimate fairy tale wedding.
  • Churches - Perfect for a more traditional style wedding.
  • Wedding Chapels - Ideal for an easy to organise, no fuss wedding.
  • Parks and Gardens - Creating a picturesque back drop for your wedding photos.

Customs

Hiring a wedding planner can make organising your dream wedding much easier than trying to plan it yourself. Wedding planners tend to specialise in a certain destination or region which means they have extensive knowledge of the area.

Paperwork

Before you get too deep into organising your marriage abroad you should check the following as recommended by the FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office):

  • Specific Documents
Find out about specific documents that the local authorities require as these may take some months to prepare.
  • Visa
You need to check if you need visas to enter the country.
  • Proof of Residency
You may need to prove that you live in the UK; this may take up to 30 days.
  • Visit the GP
If you're planning to get married in a tropical country you should visit your GP six weeks before you go to check what vaccinations you will need.
  • Insurance
You must purchase adequate travel insurance; you may also want to buy specialist insurance to cover your ceremony.
  • Written Quotes
Make sure you get these from wedding planners, venues or other services before you sign any contracts.
  • Don't Forget!
Any guests attending your wedding may also need to obtain visas, get relevant vaccinations and purchase travel insurance.
