Honeymoon Destinations - Zanzibar

If you want the sand beneath your toes, palm trees swaying behind you and a tropical sunset as the backdrop to your honeymoon then Zanzibar is the place for you.

Zanzibar

Situated in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa, the island of Zanzibar is a treasure to behold. It has tropical beaches aplenty for sun worshippers and its culture can be found in Stone Town - named so for its cool stone buildings and winding little streets.

Zanzibar offers more than just a beach holiday. With its diverse inhabitants, history in the slave trade, caves and spice forests it is a unique destination for a honeymoon.

Accommodation

Stone Town
Stone Town

Accommodation in Zanzibar is moderately priced for luxurious accommodation, depending on how luxurious you want it! Packages are available that allow you to stay on the beaches for the majority of the holiday and then visit Stone Town for a day's tour before staying there as well, which the locals recommend you do. Newlyweds can pound the pavements during the day then unwind in the evening on four poster beds, either in their room or on the beach!

Things to see

Jozani Forest Reserve
Jozani Forest Reserve

Zanzibar is proud of its culture and offers a variety of tours around the island.

  • Off the western tip of Zanzibar town, Chunguu Island, also known as Prison Island, was owned by an Arab who used it to imprison slaves. A prison was built there in 1893 but was never used. The ruins can still be seen.
  • Grave Island has been used as a Christian cemetery for many years and is loved for its beautiful beaches, snorkelling and sunbathing. Bat and Snake Islands are not visited by tourists, funnily enough!
  • Stone Town is the old part of Zanzibar town and is a World Heritage Site. There are two Sultans' palaces, an old fort, two cathedrals, faded Colonial mansions and an old Persian bathhouse to see, as well as bazaars and little shops and markets along its narrow, dusty streets.

Things to Do

Town Market

Despite being famous for its beaches, Zanzibar offers plenty of activities alongside snorkelling and water sports.

  • The 'Spice tours' (Zanzibar is also known as Spice Island) visit palace ruins, the Mangapwani Caves, and various spice and fruit plantations at the island's heart
  • Go on a Dhow cruise in the clear Indian Ocean on a traditional wooden rowing boat; spot dolphins and maybe go for a swim
  • Forest tours where you can see the red colobus monkey which can only be found on Zanzibar
  • Visit the slave quarters of Stone Town - the slave market, David Livingstone's house and Tippu Tip's house (Tip was a notorious slave trader)
  • Safari at the Jozani Forest Reserve or the Kichwele National Forest where you can spot African game

The best time to honeymoon in Zanzibar is during the spring months of August to October. The rainy season is March-May and can be very heavy. Ramadan is also a factor to bear in mind - during the fasting months of the year it is frowned up to eat, drink or smoke in public and a lot of restaurants and cafes close during the day.
