The resorts in the Maldives are on many individual islands or 'atolls' connected by causeways. So it wouldn't be crazy to imagine you are honeymooning on your own private island! - In Male, the Maldives Capital, The National Museum is a must see. Situated in the Sultan's Park, the museum is built in the ruins of the Sultan's Palace. Its exhibitions include thrones and antique artefacts used by former Sultans.
- The impressive Friday Mosque in Male which houses the Islamic Centre. The Mosque can hold 5000 people and is 300 years old.
Things to do
- Scuba dive to the astonishing underwater mountain range that includes the Lakshadweep Islands and the Chagos Islands. The coral reefs and atolls have grown on and around the mountain peaks.
- Visit the fish market and fruit bazaar in Male.
- If underwater photography interests you, the Maldives has some of the best marine life in the world. Schools of up to 100,000 fish or groups of up to 300 manta rays or eagle rays are frequently seen in and around the Maldives, as well as turtles, sharks, octopi and whales.
The Maldives has a tropical climate and is prone to storms. The best time to visit is November to Easter time.
