Civil Partnerships Abroad

Want to celebrate your Civil Partnership somewhere different from the UK?

Perhaps the idea of jetting off just the two of you to some romantic hideaway appeals to you?

You can now have a Civil Partnership in a choice of stunning, beautiful and picturesque countries that will add that special something to your perfect day.

Firstly you must be aware that there are only a number of countries which perform Civil Partnerships that are recognized legally in the UK.

  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Iceland
  • The Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Some states of the USA.

Vermont (U.S.A), Canada and New Zealand are the easiest places to organize the legal ceremonies as the paperwork can all be done in advance, here in the UK.

Vermont is particularly easy; as once you arrive in the State there is no residency period, making it ideal for couples who want to escape!

Documentation required for an overseas Civil Partnership.

Same sex marriage overseas
  • A certificate of No Impediment (CNI). Not all countries require this but the local British Embassy website will tell you which ones do.
  • Check with the country which you intend to have your civil ceremony if the documents need legalising by the UK legislation office.

Once your Civil Partnership has taken place, you will be issued with a certificate. This will state the country that you got married in. If the country that you choose is not an English speaking then you will need to get your certificate translated into English.

  • Check what kind of ceremony you are allowed in each country as this does differ; some countries don't allow guests. This is rare but you are better off checking first!
  • You can not register your partnership in the U.K but you can lodge it with the General Register Office, but it not compulsory.

There are many companies which specialise specifically on organising Civil Partnerships overseas. We would suggest that you get in touch with one of the companies and find out all the legal requirements including the in's and outs of getting married in a country before you make your final decision. You need to keep in mind the different rules each country has, for example, you have a minimum residency period in France and in Slovenia you are not allowed any guests at your ceremony. Make sure you have done your research !
